The secret is their special technology, Patented in the USA, called SpiralCell. This technology elevates AGM performance (Optima batteries are indeed AGM type, not GEL as many in the industry often believe) to a very high level. At the center of every OPTIMA battery is a series of individual spiral-wound cells, made up of two pure lead plates (99.99%) coated in a lead oxide coating. One coated plate is positive and the other is negative. Each lead plate consists of a continuous cast ribbon that maintains critical thickness tolerances. The two plates have a proprietary separator (this key component is actually made from a blend of micro-glass fiber that resembles fine cotton) that serves two fundamental functions: preventing the two plates from touching and keeping the electrolyte suspended evenly. The unique manufacturing process and precision-controlled spiral winding of continuous lead plates is much more expensive than building traditional flat plate AGM batteries. The 12-volt OPTIMA batteries are made of 6 SPIRALCELL cells, each having an open circuit voltage when fully charged of 2.2 volts for deep cycle batteries and just over 2.1 volts for starting batteries.
